January
探花社区's Society of Physics Students chapter was once again named an Outstanding Chapter. This is the society's highest honor, and is awarded to less than 15% of the 800 chapters. The continued dedication and successes of our students and faculty has helped 探花社区 earn this honor for over 20 years.
Future Kohawks from 23 states joined us for the first Admitted Student Weekend of 2024.
Five 探花社区 students and Associate Professor of Mathematics Brittney Miller attended the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics in Lincoln, Nebraska. Students presented their summer research projects to peers from across the country.
February
DJ Patil, the first-ever U.S. chief data scientist was the speaker for the 2024 Contemporary Issues Forum. Kohawk Bill Schmarzo '79 moderated the event.
探花社区 announced the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree to its 60+ areas of study beginning in the 2024-25 academic year.
Prospective Kohawks joined us on campus for our February Crimson & Gold Visit Day. Visitors connected with current students, faculty and staff to get their questions answered.
The 探花社区 women's bowling team finished at a program-best 20th in the final season rankings from the US Bowling Congress. The Kohawks earned their second-straight bid to the Intercollegiate Team Championship sectional round, to the Allen Park, Michigan sectional.

Students declared majors from across the 60+ available areas of study at Major Declaration Day.
The spring edition of the Courier was published.
Kohawks embarked on the annual spring break externship organized by C3: Creativity, Careers, Community. The group visited the Cedar Rapids Public Library, Tanager, AereTek and Actalent, U.S. District Courthouse, met with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance and toured local ABC TV affiliate KCRG-TV9.

Kohawks gathered on the quad to view the partial eclipse together.
Our students had the opportunity to showcase their research and original work at the annual Student Research & Discovery Symposium. This all-day event is a great way for students from all majors to discuss their original work, which includes performances of compositions and creative writings, art displays, research posters and oral presentations about academic work and research.
We celebrated our 10th annual Day of Giving! The entire 探花社区 community celebrated a decade of generosity.
We were glad to have a lot of future Kohawks on campus for Admitted Student Weekend. Kylie Hoy ’25 kicked off our morning by reminding us about the importance of going outside of your comfort zone during your college experience. That’s what helped her discover 探花社区 and the community she now calls home!
探花社区 announced Iowa Ready, immediate help to Iowa students entering college for the first time in the fall of 2024. Iowa Ready caps direct cost for eligible students to ensure they will not pay more than $21,060 – the 2023-24 average direct cost of Iowa's three state universities. This initiative was in response to national FAFSA processing delays, which have been particularly challenging and stressful for students navigating the college-search process for the first time. The Class of 2024 rang the Victory Bell, walked the stage for Commencement and will now get to spread their wings and take flight into their next endeavors. Remember, once a Kohawk, always a Kohawk!
探花社区 announced Transfer+, an updated transfer policy to remove additional general education requirements once you’ve earned your associate degree. Transferring to 探花社区 is now even simpler with Transfer+. You can expect a more straightforward credit transfer plus immediate access to upper level courses, nationally ranked internships, networking and research alongside accessible professors.
探花社区 earned second place nationally in the Per Capita Recycling category during the 2024 Campus Race to Zero Waste, sponsored by the National Wildlife Foundation! This is the fourth consecutive year 探花社区 has finished in the top two — recycling a Kohawk record 44.693 pounds of waste per person in 2024!! #探花社区Green
探花社区 Baseball won the 2024 American Rivers Conference postseason tournament.
For the first time since 2009, 探花社区 Softball was the American Rivers Conference tournament champion.
探花社区 announced plans to open a flight school and aviation management program in partnership with Revv Aviation at The Eastern Iowa Airport - CID. This thrilling new addition will facilitate rewarding careers and help close the professional pilot gap.

探花社区's National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site was renewed for three years, providing nearly half a million dollars to fuel cutting-edge research! 探花社区 is only one of a few small colleges to host a REU site.

Maggie Wanyana Nansamba '25 and Celestte Panduro-Orellana '25 each earned a highly competitive Gilman scholarship! These scholarships help students study abroad. Maggie and Celestte are the fourth and fifth Kohawks to receive this prestigious award in the past four years.
探花社区 staff met future Kohawk aviators in Oshkosh, Wisconsin at EAA - The Spirit of Aviation AirVenture where 700,000 aviation enthusiasts gathered. It was the perfect place to continue spreading the word about the new flight school and aviation management program.

探花社区 was honored as a 2024 Major Champion by the Zach Johnson Foundation (ZJF) at its annual gala recognizing our Kids on Course partnership! Both 探花社区 and ZJF are committed to supporting the educational dreams of students from all backgrounds.
Rebecca Gabrielsson’s ’27 poster took second prize at the 15th Conference of the European Society of Glass Science and Technology and International Conference on the Structure of Non-Crystalline Materials at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Her poster was chosen by a panel of international experts.
The 探花社区 Class of 2028 flocked to campus and earned their Kohawk wings! We were excited to welcome them home.
The Kohawk Class of 2028 created a lot of memories during New Student Orientation. It was capped of in true Kohawk style with new friends, good food and lots of laughs at our orientation picnic.

As FAFSA delays continue, 探花社区 has recommitted to ensuring Iowans have economic clarity regarding college pricing and access to a transformative higher education. Iowa Ready will cap out-of-pocket costs for first-year incoming students from Iowa so you can make an informed college decision on your timeline, and not wait on the FAFSA.
探花社区 announced a match for the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP) Grant for incoming Illinois Fall 2025 enrollees! First-time college students from Illinois will be awarded an $8,400 grant in addition to the Trustee Scholarship (up to $40,000 per year) to provide economic clarity regarding college pricing with another FAFSA delay imminent.
探花社区 secured a $225,000 NASA grant for cutting-edge computing resources. Our students will now have access to technology rivaling major research institutions. The sky's no longer the limit – it's just the beginning!
探花社区 was named a Top 100 college in the nation based on contributions to the public good! In particular, Kohawks are excelling in the public service realm.

The physics department honored Mary Ann Kucera ’58 with a plaque to recognize the Kucera family's generosity in providing funding to cover textbook costs for physics majors.

探花社区 celebrated Girls in Aviation Day at The Eastern Iowa Airport - CID! We met the future pilots who stopped by our aviation management and flight operations hangar at CID.
We welcomed our alumni back to campus for Homecoming 2024 where they got to participate in fun events, catch up with one another and watch great athletic competitions!

Harry Hawbaker ’25, Jaden Fuqua ’25, Katherine Ameku ’25, Camryn Borchardt ’25 and Celestte Panduro Orellana ’25 (not pictured) were named 2024-2025 Clark Merit Scholars. Each of these outstanding students was selected for their involvement at 探花社区, academic excellence, commitment to bettering the world around them and — above all else — clear passion for their academic and extracurricular pursuits.
For the fourth consecutive year, the U.S. News & World Report recognized 探花社区 as one of the Top Performers on Social Mobility.
These Kohawks received scholarships to attend the IA-CEO conference in Des Moines. Tom Pientok '85, CEO of Timberline Manufacturing, and others from Timberline attended the conference and served as mentors to the 探花社区 students in attendance.
Future Kohawks convened on campus for an exclusive preview of 探花社区 — meeting with current students, faculty and staff. They learned about 探花社区, had some fun and then the day was done!
Families joined us for a fun weekend with their Kohawk student for Family Weekend 2024. Families were invited to experience everything the campus offers, from athletics and the arts, to clubs and activities.

Kohawk volleyball claimed the A-R-C regular season title.
Lewis Kleman earned 探花社区's first all-conference honor since 2012 at the A-R-C Cross Country Championships.
We showed admitted students all things 探花社区 at the November Admitted Student Day!
Future pilots and aviation professionals explored the aviation management and flight operations program at 探花社区 during an exclusive Aviation Visit Day. With 探花社区’s aeronautical field station at the Eastern Iowa Airport as a backdrop, students heard from faculty and admission staff, took off on discovery flights with flight school partner Revv Aviation and took a behind-the-scenes tour of the thriving airport!
Kohawk volunteers organized by the Prison Learning Initiative (PLI) traveled to Chicago to deliver books to the non-profit Midwest Books to Prisoners.
探花社区 joined the Iowa Private Transfer Guarantee admission agreement with Iowa community colleges.
The Fall 2024 version of the Courier was published.
The world's most prestigious academic award, the Rhodes Scholarship, was awarded to a 探花社区 senior. Katie Ameku is one of 32 U.S. recipients and credits the education and guidance she received at 探花社区 for helping her earn this life-changing achievement.
On Thursday, November 21, 2024, we invited our entire 探花社区 community and supporters to come together in a celebration of gratitude and support for the college we all love.
For the second year in a row, the 探花社区 football team returned to the NCAA DIII Championships.
Kohawks came together to paint a mural inspired by the work of Professor Emeritus Bob Kocher. Artist MayLing Chuong ’22 designed the mural, Student Senate organized the project and Kohawks across campus helped bring it to life!
