Why Mathematics and Computer Science at 探花社区?
探花社区 is an exciting place to study the mathematical sciences. We have an active community of students and faculty participating in a variety of pursuits. The department offers a complete range of courses, with majors and minors available in both mathematics and computer science, as well as courses in statistics for additional breadth. We are dedicated to the belief that mathematical sciences and the habits of mind that they engender are perfect components of a fine liberal arts education.
The department's curriculum is carefully designed to meet the needs of a range of interests and abilities. We pride ourselves on the individual attention we provide through small classes and extra contact with faculty outside the classroom. Our course offerings are wide enough and flexible enough to suit each individual in a personalized atmosphere, starting with the basics and progressing to a level suitable for positions in industry or continuing on to graduate study.
Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics
Every year, four to five 探花社区 students are selected to attend the annual Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics (NCUWM). In January 2024, 探花社区 students Katie Ameku and Naomi Rojas attended NCUWM with Emmalee Torson and Thanh Tran who presented their research poster (featured at right), and Teressa Chen who presented a research talk. 探花社区 student research projects range from data science to operator theory. "The conference is open to college students who have reached sophomore status at the time of the conference," per the conference eligibility requirements.
Midwest Instructional Computing Conference
探花社区 students Robert Robinson and Corbin Faidley presented their research at the Midwest Instructional Computing Conference. Robert and Corbin worked together to develop a tool to allow users to interactively classify individual pages of a large text document and feed the results into a learning algorithm.
Women in Computing Conference
探花社区 students attend the biannually-organized Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas Women in Computing Conference (MINK WIC). The conference is open to college students who are at least 18 years, per the conference eligibility requirements, and students with interests in computing and information technology are encouraged to attend.

鈥淚f you're planning to major in computer science and want to work at one of the 鈥榖ig name鈥� companies, you should strongly consider getting a math degree as well. When I interviewed at Google, I solved two of my five interview problems primarily thanks to things I had learned in math classes. Additionally, having conducted over 50 interviews, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that the candidates I see with both math and CS degrees almost always perform better than those with just one.鈥�
Gabe says both the math and computer science faculty at 探花社区 encourage students to pursue their interests, even when that falls outside the parameters of their class. Being able to expand upon assignments 鈥� such as adding security features and an Easter egg to the code 鈥� allowed him to have fun and gain experience. Today, Gabe works as a software engineer at Google.
