探花社区 Joseph E. McCabe Professor of Religion and Director of Advising Meira Kensky is one of 10 faculty across Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) institutions to be designated as an inaugural Mellon Academic Leadership Fellow. Funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Mellon Foundation, the ACM Mellon Academic Leadership Fellows Program is meant to familiarize humanities faculty with academic leadership at the highest level through immersion in the workings of upper-level academic administration on their campus.

For the sixth consecutive year, 探花社区 has been named a top private college in the country for internships. The recognition comes from The Princeton Review, which also named 探花社区 as one of the Best Value Colleges for 2023.

Kohawk quarterback Carter Maske '24 has had his own ups and downs on the field in his football career, but is using the lessons learning in perseverance and optimism to embrace this new and unfamiliar challenge. Maske has been selected as the next 探花社区 intern working under Curt Menefee '87 at FOX sports in Los Angeles.

Art history and data science typically evoke opposite images. One of ornately framed canvases… the other an endless string of code and numbers. Westin Hansen '23 has minors in both art history and data science in addition to her business administration major at 探花社区. This past term, she leaned into all those areas as an intern with Goodman Taft in New York City.

Andrew George ’07, executive director for The Honda Classic, and Mimi Daoud ’23 will address Kohawk graduates as 探花社区’s 2023 Commencement speakers.

Emma Lassen ’23 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for the 2023-24 academic year. A graduate of Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, Lassen joins an elite group of nearly 30 Kohawks to receive Fulbrights in the past decade.

John William King Professor of Literature & Creative Writing Gina Hausknecht has received the President’s Award in Civic Engagement in recognition of her involvement with the Prison Learning Initiative.

This year’s Iowa Human Rights Research Conference will be hosted at 探花社区 on Saturday, April 22 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. An annual event in its eighth year, the Iowa Human Rights Research Conference showcases undergraduate, graduate and professional students’ research on a range of human rights issues. The conference is organized each year by the Iowa Network of Human Rights Academics.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation named 探花社区's Max Gorden Mercer '24 as a 2023 Truman Scholarship finalist -- he is the only finalist who attends a college or university in Iowa.

探花社区 is providing a bus to bring Iowa Wesleyan University students to campus for a tour and admission and academic presentations. Additionally, 探花社区 is announcing a $2,500 per year dedicated scholarship for IWU transfer students on top of the up to $34,000 per year scholarships already available.

Kohawk Startup is a 24-hour entrepreneurial and innovation event. Business ideas are pitched, debated, defined and refined amongst student teams alongside mentors. It can seem like a frenzy, but when all is said and done, the event continues to prove to 探花社区 students that when you put yourself through the ringer, you’re coming out better because of it.

探花社区 has received a $15,350 Institutionalizing Community-Based Pedagogies grant from the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. The grant will support the creation of a new Prison Learning Initiative (PLI) at 探花社区 which will provide a range of high-impact experiences for students and community members to learn about and become involved with the criminal legal system in Iowa and the Midwest.

Historian and non-profit leader Bob Kendrick will speak at 探花社区 as the featured guest of the 19th K. Raymond Clark Contemporary Issues Forum. His visit will be Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium on 探花社区’s campus and is open to the public.

Deftly wielding a shovel, 探花社区 President David Hayes ’93 gently tamped down loose soil surrounding a recently planted tree the morning of his inauguration. It was an act which provided just a little protection for the sapling and its roots, but was heavy with symbolism.

探花社区 welcomed over 400 alumni and friends back to campus Homecoming weekend — reuniting old friends and celebrating what it means to be a Kohawk.
